Conference - "Gender equality agenda at the local level: main challenges and action steps"
2023-10-09On 9 October UN Women, in partnership with the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG), organized a conference "Gender Equality Agenda at the Local Level: Key Challenges and Actions."
The main goal of the conference was to advance the gender equality and women's empowerment agenda at the local level.
The meeting was attended by Giorgi Tkemaladze, Chair of Tbilisi City Municipal Assembly, together with heads of all 64 municipalities in Georgia (mayors and heads of sakrebulos), as well as representatives of legislative and executive governments, development partners, and civil society organizations.
At the end of the event, representatives from five municipalities – Zugdidi, Zestafoni, Samtredia, Chokhatauri, and Baghdati – signed the European Charter on the Equality of Men and Women in Local Life, increasing the number of municipalites which have acceded to the Charter in Georgia to as a result of which the number of signatory municipalities increased to 26.
Within the framework of the event, a memorandum of understanding was signed between NALAG and the National Statistics Office of Georgia. The memorandum aims to strengthen thematic cooperation on gender data at the local level.
This initiative takes place within the framework of the UN Women project 'Women’s Increased Leadership for Democracy in Georgia' (WILD), funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
