EMPOWERING SUSTAINABLE URBANIZATION: INSIGHTS FROM THE UCLG RETREAT 2024 IN BARCELONA

From February 19th to 23rd, the Executive Director of the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG) and the Vice-President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) atteded the retreat of the UCLG.
Around the globe, up to 300 delegates, comprising local government leaders, association heads, and experts, participated in the meeting.
The UCLG Retreat was divided into several sessions focusing on a wide range of topics: inclusive and sustainable cities, social and solidarity economy and finance, sustainable mobility, gender equality at the local level, sustainable and climate-smart cities, local integration for migrants, inclusive local service delivery, transparency and open governance, peace initiatives, and the role of local authorities in implementing the global agenda.
The meetings featured presentations of the 2023 reports, showcasing good and detrimental practices from various regions concerning the aforementioned topics. The sessions also delved into crucial aspects of the Pact for the Future of Humanity and outlined the agenda for the upcoming UCLG World Congress.
Over the course of five days, an action plan was formulated at the end of the summit, incorporating the proposals put forward by the delegates. According to the meeting organizers, this document focuses on addressing global challenges, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of UCLG member countries’ efforts at both national and international levels.
As part of the meeting, a session of the working group established by the European Section of UCLG took place,with the participation of Nino Rukhadze. It’s noteworthy that an informal gathering of local and regional leaders within UCLG occurs annually, providing a platform for participants to exchange experiences and foster cooperation in advancing sustainable urbanization efforts.
